The Beginner’s Guide to New Wash (From a Hairstylist)
New Wash by HAIRSTORY is a gentle cleansing cream designed to clean and nourish your hair without harsh detergents that can strip away the hair’s natural, protective oils. Instead, it uses a blend of essential oils and fatty alcohols to remove dirt and buildup while maintaining moisture effectively. Unlike traditional cleansers, the fatty alcohols in New Wash have a larger molecular structure, allowing them to hydrate the hair without penetrating excessively, helping prevent dryness and damage.
In my first blog post, I will share with you why I like using New Wash, how I use it, and how to have a clean transition to a new way of washing.
Why I like using New Wash:
👍No harsh detergents: I use this to wash my hair and exclusively on my 4-year-old son. I like that I don’t have to worry about it getting into his eyes and causing discomfort.
👍Scent: They do not use harmful, endocrine-disrupting fragrances. Instead, they use ingredients such as sweet almond oil, geranium, and clove essential oils.
👍One and done: Although you can rinse and repeat, New Wash is a conditioning cleanser. Which means you can apply one product and simplify your wash routine.
Because New Wash is different from traditional, detergent-based shampoos, how you use it is also different.
HERE WE GO!
The first thing to consider is choosing the correct formula.
New Wash comes in three different formulas.
🧡Original: For all hair types; essentially like an equal balance of traditional shampoo and conditioner
🧡Deep: For oily hair; this formula is more cleanse than condition
🧡Rich: For dry or curly hair; this formula is more condition than cleanse
Pro tip * I would start with New Wash Original, as it offers a balanced blend of cleansing and conditioning. This formula provides a great starting point, allowing you to assess your hair’s needs. If you need more moisture, you can switch to New Wash Rich, or if you prefer a deeper cleanse, you can opt for New Wash Deep.
Now, let’s discuss how I like to use it.
STEP 1: Wet hair and generously dispense product.
Wet your hair as you normally would. Then, dispense a generous amount of product into your hands - about the same amount you would use for both shampoo and conditioner.
STEP 2: Layer it on!
I like to think of my palms as reservoirs and my fingers as the applicators. I use the full length of my fingers to work the product into the hair, focusing on the scalp area. I return to my palms for more product as I continue to distribute it evenly.
Personal tip * Since I have medium to long hair with fine to medium density, I flip my hair over to ensure the underside is fully saturated.
STEP 3: Add a splash of water to get a smooth and milky consistency.
This is where the magic happens!
The goal is to add a little water to loosen things up. I like to add water with my hands at the shampoo bowl or quickly tip my head back into the shower stream. This allows the product to capture and bond to the buildup, dirt, and excess oil.
STEP 4: Work into hair and scalp.
At this point, I start cleaning the scalp. I use the HAIRSTORY’s Massaging Scalp Brush to make small circles all over the scalp. Your fingertips will work if you don’t have a scalp brush, but I highly recommend theirs. I also use the brush to help distribute the product through the hair and gently detangle it.
STEP 5: Let it sit for 2-3 minutes then rinse.
When servicing guests at the shampoo bowl, I use this time to give a relaxing scalp massage. At home, I finish the rest of my shower. You don’t need to time it; go with your flow. As I mentioned earlier, I have always used this on my 4-year-old. And even though he may not want to wait 2-3 minutes, his hair always gets clean.
When you’re ready, rinse your hair. You want to make sure the product is rinsed out well. This step is crucial for success with New Wash. I like to tell my guests that when they think they’re done, rinse it again.
The last thing that I’d like to write about is transitioning to New Wash from traditional shampoo and conditioner.
I believe you’ll notice the benefits of New Wash immediately. However, just like adjusting to a new routine, your scalp may also need to adapt. Some clients, particularly those with fine or oily hair, have experienced oiliness or flakiness during the transition. This happens because traditional detergent-based shampoos can cause scalps to overproduce oil. Since New Wash preserves the hair’s natural, protective oils, it may take some time for your scalp to adjust. Your oil production should begin to balance out within three weeks.
That said, there are two common reasons why hair may feel greasy or have buildup after using New Wash.
🙊Not using enough New Wash: You will want to use the same amount of product as you use for both shampoo and conditioner combined. This should be enough to coat the hair the way a hair mask would.
🙊Not rising it out thoroughly: New Wash bonds to impurities (remember those fatty alcohols?) and requires a little more rinsing to work it out completely.
Alternatively, you can seek assistance with HAIRSTORY’s newly launched product, Pre-Wash. HAIRSTORY’s website states, “Pre-Wash uses purifying prebiotic micellar technology to gently break down product buildup, oil and dirt.” This is an incredible product that I plan to dedicate an entire post to in the future.
Thanks for reading my perspective on HAIRSTORY’s New Wash. I shared why I like it personally, how I use it professionally, and offered some insight into having a successful transition.
